Leman Russ Tank Commanders are a prime example of a unit that lacks both internal and external balance. While I’ve got your attention, let’s talk about internal versus external balance. In all other respects, Demolisher Tank Commanders with hull Heavy Bolters and no sponsons are the optimal choice. The Leman Russ Tank Commander with Executioner Plasma Cannon, hull Heavy Bolter, and Plasma sponsons is the premiere PEQ killer, killing 8 Primaris a turn. The Leman Russ Tank Commander with Punisher Gatling Cannon, hull Heavy Bolter, and sponson Heavy Bolters is a standout threat against infantry, killing 17.5 GEQ per turn. Let’s look at some other standout options: While putting sponsons on a Tank Commander will make it kill more, you would be better spending the points on more Tank Commanders. Recalling that a Tank Commander with Heavy Bolter has a 71% efficiency, taking any sponsons drops that efficiency. Moving forward with a Demolisher Tank Commander with a Heavy Bolter as our best value overall we can ask, are sponsons worth it? (again, performing the same process and applying scaling factors). Demolisher tanks clearly outshine Battle Cannons and Executioner Plasma Cannons, with nearly twice the efficiency, as a direct result of the d6 damage afforded by the Demolisher Cannons. Now we see an interesting flip where Demolisher Tank Commanders with Heavy Bolters become the best value due to their slightly lower cost. Applying this scaling factor relative to Demolisher Tank Commanders with a hull Lascannon we get: Scaled Efficiencies based on projected Output and Input Since the hulls are the same, any weapon shooting at a Tank Commander will return an effective 1.25 times more “damage” to your army. For every Demolisher Tank Commander with a Lascannon (200 points) you can buy 1.25 regular Demolishers with a Heavy Bolter (160 points). The caveat to this however is that Leman Russes do not kill single wound infantry very efficiently (15% on average) and they are far from their ideal targets.Īnother caveat is that this table fails to account for the increased resilience of regular Russes. Against 2W or less infantry heavy bolters are ~2x more efficient than Lascannons. The big caveat to this is that these calculations are weighted towards heavy infantry and vehicles. The second takeaway is that hull Lascannons slightly outperform hull Heavy Bolters in this test. The first takeaway from this is that Tank Commanders are the superior option in all respects. We can then average the damage inflicted across all 5-unit types to come up with an average efficiency for each tank, summarized below: Output Efficiencies based on a Sample That is, the cost of models killed divided by the cost of the tank. KEQ: Knight Equivalent– T8, 3+, 5++, infinite wounds, 21 points per woundĭamage will be calculated on a point efficiency basis. VEQ: Vehicle Equivalent– T7, 3+, infinite wounds, 10 points per wound HIEQ: Heavy Intercessor Equivalent– T5, 3+, 3W, 35 points per model PEQ: Primaris Equivalent– T4, 3+, 2W, 20 points per model GEQ: Guardsmen Equivalent– T3, 5+, 5.5 points per model Damage is calculated where each tank is shooting twice (moved under half), random number of shots can be rerolled (Catachan or Gunnery Experts), and Tank Commanders order themselves to reroll ones. To compute efficiencies, I’ve lined up a series of targets to represent a myriad of units found in the game. With the January Field Manual just released, I thought I would take a look at Russes to see if there were any overlooked options. If that wasn’t enough there’s also the choice of running a Russ as a Tank Commander or standard battle tank. As the mainstay of the Astra Militarum with 7 turret options, 3 hull options, and 4 sponson options, figuring out how to outfit a Russ for battle can be a daunting proposition for even an experienced Guard commander.
